From One Bride-to-Be to the Next: Why My Fiancé and I Decided to Go Ring Shopping Together
Your engagement ring is a meaningful part of your relationship. They signify the vow you have made to one another and a physical symbolization of your love for one another. Your engagement ring is a gorgeous piece of jewelry you will wear every day, so you want to ensure that the ring feels very you.
Your engagement ring will cost a pretty penny, and for that reason, you want to make sure you love your ring now as much as you love your soon-to-be fiancé, but more importantly, you want to love your ring for years to come. So that leads us to a very important question, should you go ring shopping with your partner? Does it ruin the surprise?
There’s no greater feeling when a couple decides to take their relationship to the next level. For my fiancé and I, we knew early on in our relationship that we were in it for the long haul (like they say, when you know, you know). Talking about our future together gave me butterflies (the good kind, of course), and when my fiancé asked me what kind of ring I envisioned myself wearing, I drew a blank.
To be honest, I couldn’t picture anything on my ring finger because no other past relationships felt this real. Many couples ponder whether they should go ring shopping together and my fiance and I were no different. Of course, I wanted to be surprised, but I also wanted to make sure the ring is everything I ever wanted. After talking it out and making a pros and cons list of shopping together (dorky, I know, but that’s us), we decided to go ring shopping together.
“More and more often, we are seeing couples going engagement ring shopping together! Shopping for a ring together is a great bonding experience for the couple, and ensures that both people feel a real connection with the ring and it fits the wearer’s unique style,” says the team at Brilliant Earth. In a recent study conducted by Brilliant Earth, they reported that 40% of men and 35% of women said they would shop together for a ring.
In hindsight, I wouldn’t have changed my decision. There are many mixed feelings about couples shopping for rings together, but I loved our experience. I wanted to go ring shopping because, at the time, I didn’t know much about the 4 C’s or my engagement ring style. I’m really fortunate that my fiancé made it a really fun experience. He planned a special date for us to go ring shopping in Philly, and ee hopped around from store to store trying on various rings in different band settings and stone shapes (what else could a girl want, right?). At the end of the day, the only thing that I knew for sure was that I wanted a round stone diamond.
So, how does our proposal story end? He worked with a jeweler to create a custom romantic antique-style setting adorned with diamonds along the sides featuring a round cut diamond in the center, and yes, it’s even prettier than I imagined (and yes, I do find myself aimlessly staring at it).
