So tell us, what made you want to extend your business into bridal?
I started selling white dresses on BHLND.com, the collection did so well they asked me to create bridal pieces specifically for them. From there, I decided to create my own bridal collection. The gowns are a natural progression of my brand and aesthetic. My bridal designs capture the essence of affordable luxury.
How do you go about designing wedding dresses?
The same way I approach designing in general. I want to make every woman feel beautiful; that’s been my intent since the beginning. We invest a lot of time on fit, so each piece looks great on the woman’s body, whether she is petite, average or plus size. Flattery is about visual illusions. Design techniques like creating a waistline that curve up slightly instead of being a straight line, giving you the appearance of a smaller waist and stomach.
How does designing for bridal differ from designing your RTW collection?
Women today are more than just one type and my bridal collection is an opportunity to acknowledge the multiple influences and styles they possess.
What was the inspiration for your Spring 2018 collection?
Grace Kelly, Mia Farrow and Marilyn Monroe. All three of these women are icons in their own right. Grace Kelly, a classic and timeless beauty. Marilyn Monroe the sexy risk taker. Mia Farrow the girl next door. There is something out there for everyone in our collection.
What are some of your favorite bridal trends of the moment?
Jumpsuits are my favorites. It may not be the most traditional option but, I appreciate the modernity. It’s a new classic! You can wear it on your wedding day or for the rehearsal dinner.
If you could dress one celebrity on their big day who would it be?
I have had the pleasure to dress many influential women and those powerful, strong, graceful personalities have shaped my designs. One of my greatest achievements to date was dressing the former first lady, Michelle Obama for the State Dinner the Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe. Her beauty, grace and influence will leave a lasting legacy.
How should a bride prepare for her first dress shopping appointment?
Have an idea of what you’re looking for. Whether it’s styles, colors or details, a direction is definitely helpful so you’re not overwhelmed. That being said, be open-minded. Try something that you like but may not have considered before. You never know what might end up being the gown of your dreams!
